The battery is the most expensive part of an electric scooter, often a third of its price. How you charge and store it decides whether it serves you for years or starts to fade in its first season.
Everyday charging
- Do not wait for it to run flat. Lithium batteries have no "memory". Charging often, whenever you can, is better than running it down to the end.
- Do not charge it straight after a ride. Give it 20-30 minutes to cool. A hot battery that is charged wears out faster.
- Use only the original charger. Another charger may have a different voltage and damage the battery, even if the plug fits.
- Do not leave it charging for days. Unplug it when it is done. Most chargers show this with a green light.
- Charge it indoors, somewhere dry, away from heat sources and not next to anything flammable.
In winter
Cold does not damage the battery while you ride, but it does cut the range. On cold days you may get noticeably fewer kilometres than in summer. It comes back as soon as the weather warms up.
What damages the battery is charging it while it is very cold. If the scooter has stood outside in frost, bring it in and let it warm up for about an hour before charging.
When you will not use it for weeks
If you leave the scooter for the winter or over a holiday:
- Leave the battery about half charged, not full and not empty.
- Store it indoors, at room temperature.
- Check it every 4-6 weeks and top it back up to about half.
A battery left completely empty for months may never charge again.
Water and the battery
Even scooters rated IPX5 or IP55 handle rain, not deep puddles. Do not ride through water that covers the wheel and do not hose the scooter down. Wipe it with a damp cloth.
When to worry
A few signs need checking straight away: a battery that swells, gets very hot while charging, gives off a smell, or whose range drops sharply within a few days. In any of these cases, stop charging it and contact us.
On models like the X9 ProMax the battery comes out, so you charge it indoors without carrying the scooter upstairs.
