Some kids' electric cars run on one 12V battery, others on two 6V batteries. Many parents ask whether it matters and what they need to know.

Two 6V batteries make 12V

When two 6V batteries are wired in series, their voltages add: 6V + 6V = 12V. For the car, the result is the same as one 12V battery. The motor sees the same voltage.

That means the voltage on the product page (12V) is what matters when you compare models. You do not need to know whether there is one battery or two inside.

What changes in practice

  • Capacity (Ah) is what tells you how long the car runs on a charge, not voltage alone. Two batteries in series have the capacity of one of them, while the voltage doubles.
  • Replacement: if the car has two batteries, both must be replaced with the same type and capacity. An old battery wired to a new one shortens the life of both.
  • Wiring: connecting batteries is a job for the workshop, not the parent. A wrong connection can damage the car or the batteries.

How to keep the battery healthy

These rules apply to almost any kids' car battery:

  1. Use only the charger supplied with the car. A charger of a different voltage damages the battery.
  2. Charge after use, not after it has been fully drained and left that way for days.
  3. Do not leave it charging unattended for a very long time. Follow the charge time in the model's manual.
  4. In winter, when the car is not used, charge it from time to time and store it somewhere dry and not too cold.
  5. Keep the battery dry and out of strong sun for long periods.

Exact charge times and rules vary by model, so always follow the manual that comes with the product. For scooter batteries, which are a different type, see our article The electric scooter battery.

When to contact the workshop

  • The car runs much shorter than it used to.
  • The charger does not fill the battery or it gets very hot.
  • The car stops by itself while in use.

In these cases message us on WhatsApp or use the Contact page. For warranty, see the Warranty page.
